Construction and Working of a Screw Conveyor

A screw conveyor consists of a helical (or spiral) screw that is set in a tube or trough. The screw is connected to a drive on one end that rotates the screw, moving the material from the inlet to the discharge end of the conveyor. Many variations exist for diverse applications, such as screws that are a shaft-less spiral, or units that have multiple screws in the trough going in the same or opposite directions with multiple inlets and discharges. The amount of volume transferred by the conveyor is dependent upon the rotation rate of the shaft and the spacing of the flighting (or blades) of the screw. These conveyors find their use in industrial applications to move material such as aggregate, wood chips, powders, etc. from one point to another. Screw conveyors can also be used as variable rate feeders where the rotation rate of the shaft is configured to deliver a measured quantity of a material in a process.

Advantages of Screw Conveyors

There are numerous advantages of screw conveyors, which is why they are used in many industrial applications. A few major advantages of screw conveyors include:
  1. Screw conveyors can be used to handle dry, as well as semi fluid materials.
  2. Screw conveyors are an economical solution compared to other conveyors, such as aeromechanical or pneumatic conveyors.
  3. When space allows, screw conveyors can be inclined and allow you to efficiently elevate and convey your material.
  4. Screw conveyors can be fully enclosed to contain corrosive and hazardous materials, making them suitable for dusty and hazardous environments.
