What Is Bulk Material Bridging and Ratholing? How It Can Be Prevented?

These challenges can be easily addressed using our used industrial bin activators. • Bridging: Bridging or arching terms are mainly used when interchangeably to describe an arch-shaped profile formed above the outlet of a storage container. This arch-shaped profile inhibits the flow of dry bulk solids. If this is not addressed immediately, this flow issue can cause long-term damage to the bin activator.

• Ratholing: This occurs when bulk solids stick to the walls of the container. When there is an excess buildup, a thin passageway forms above the outlet or the feed auger. This is important to address this issue as lot of materials may get wasted during the process.

There are a few ways to alleviate these bulk material flow challenges. Using custom flow aids is one of the most effective ways to address bin flow issues. What Are the Features of Bin Activators?

• Baffle Plates: The baffle plate is located at center of the bin activator. The plate is conical shaped and attached to the equipment body using metal parts, which are made of steel. These plates can be availed in different configurations and angles such as 60°, 45°, 30°, and 15°. These plates induce vibrations in the material to ensure the smooth bulk material flow from the upstream equipment. There is a secondary deflector plate, which helps ease the weight of bulk material from the lower portion of the bin activator. The plate helps spread the weight in adjacent areas to the cone surface.
• Polymer Seal and Suspensions: The vibrating bin discharger and the equipment above it feature a flexible connection made of polyester seal and spring suspension links. The polyester seal helps prevent the leakage or slipping of dry bulk material. Spring suspensions are installed external to the system and they can absorb the vibrations produced by the cone head. In short, these spring suspensions contain the vibrations in the cone itself and do not agitate the upstream equipment.
• Flanges: The cone of the silo is designed short to fit the bin activator. This leaves lots of space on the sides of the outlet. This space is covered using a flange. The flange is bolted using a vibrating bin discharger.
• Vibration Motors: The vibratory motor is mounted external to the bin activator. This motor creates a vibratory motion and causes the bin activator to vibrate. This ensures the flow of dry bulk materials in the system. A system may feature one or multiple vibratory motors.
